Over 1,000 athletes to compete in off-road triathlon event at Lake Las Vegas
Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort in Henderson will host the XTERRA West Championship triathlon and accompanying off-road sports festival for the second straight year on April 24-25, 2010.
More than 1,000 competitors from across the country will take part in the various races. The main event, an off-road triathlon comprised of a one-mile swim in Lake Las Vegas, an 18-mile mountain bike up, down, & around the expansive and private desert surrounding the resort, and a 6.2-mile trail run, awards $10,500 in prize money and attracts some of the world’s best athletes.
“Henderson is thrilled to host this prestigious event for the second year in a row” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “We look forward to the national exposure the event will bring to the city, introducing Henderson’s great amenities to thousands of athletes, their families, attendees and event organizers.”
As the first of four XTERRA regional championships in the nationwide America Tour that features 65 races in 35 states, the West Championship awards 41 qualifying slots into the XTERRA World Championship to the top amateur finishers in each age group.
In addition to the main event, a half-distance off-road triathlon dubbed the “XTERRA Sport race,” an XTERRA Duathlon (run-mountain bike-run), and 5K, 10K, and 21K trail runs will be offered. The best Paul Mitchell stylists in Nevada will be onsite giving haircuts in exchange for a $15 donation to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and the post-race party will be the stuff of legends, unfolding onsite at Loews’ Nuala Pool with great food, slideshows, music, and swimming.
“There could be no better place to kick off the season than at Lake Las Vegas,” said David Nicholas, the managing director of the XTERRA World Tour. “Whether you gamble or not, Nevada is one fascinating place. The lights, the shows, the restaurants are absolutely world class, and now we have an XTERRA race at a first class resort just minutes from the Strip and the airport. This event promises to be epic.”
