The off-Broadway musical, I Love A Piano, which honors America’s most prolific songwriter, Irving Berlin, makes its southern Nevada debut at the Henderson Pavilion, located at 200 S. Green Valley Parkway, on Friday, April 18 at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $20 to $40.
I Love A Piano is a nostalgic musical voyage spanning across seven decades of American history as seen through the eyes of Irving Berlin. Using 64 of Berlin’s ever-lasting favorites, this quirky musical centers on the life of a piano with one sour key and the generations of singers and dancers who performed with it.
Russian-born Berlin immigrated to New York with his family at five years old. A self-taught musician, Berlin began his career as a singing waiter in Chinatown and eventually became a lyricist. His breakthrough was during WWI as an Army sergeant at Upton, New York with the song “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and a battle song written for his all-soldier show Yip, Yip Yapshank.
He wrote the scores to more than a dozen Broadway musicals, including Annie Get Your Gun, and provided songs for dozens of Hollywood movie musicals. With a collection of over 1,200 songs, including "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "God Bless America," Berlin defines the music of our country. His songs have been sung by Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby and many others.
“Irving Berlin was one of the 20th century’s most gifted and multitalented songwriters,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “He is an incredible man who played a vital role in shaping America’s culture and history. Berlin’s legacy lives on through producers, musicians, singers and actors of the past, present and future.”
Berlin has won many awards including an Academy Award for "White Christmas," a Congressional Gold Medal, a special Tony Award and a commemoration on the 2002 U.S. postage stamp.
Creators Ray Roderick and Michael Berkley capture the spirit of America in “I Love A Piano.” The musical celebrates the influences from the various eras through specially choreographed dance, memorable songs and decade-appropriate costumes.
